All the Talk about Hormonal Replacement Therapy By: Fran Amado
Menopause is a natural part of the woman’s aging process. It is the time when the woman’s period stops. The levels of female hormones can go up and down in the years before and during menopause. Hot flashes and vaginal dryness can occur during this process. Some women usually take hormonal replacement therapy to relieve these symptoms. Osteoporosis may also be protected by (HRT). However, there are also risks with HRT. The risks are heart disease, breast cancer and strokes and are typically at play when HRT is being used, although, each woman’s risk can vary depending on her past lifestyle and health history. The risks and benefits should be discussed with you by your health care provider. If you are deciding to take HRT, then it should be the lowest dose recommended and for the shortest time needed. A re-evaluation every six months should be needed if you’re taking hormones.
There are many women out there who are frightened of taking hormone replacement treatment that they have decided to forget about it. This reaction is not surprising at all because almost every day there is some sort of new scare headline blaring at them saying that HRT causes cancer and even brain shrinkage. The women who were recently told that they could regain their lost sexuality by using hormones are now being warned against it. All of this confusion really is a shame to be honest, because as the result of it, many women are losing out on feeling their absolute best and making the most of their everyday lives. When headlines are blaring, the effort made to inform women about what types of hormones are being discussed is little to none. Also, to add to all the confusion, the names of the hormones most often replaced, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, has become generic terms. These specific terms are used freely and without regulation to describe the natural hormones produced by the body, bio-identical hormones and hormone drug products. To make matters more confusing, all hormone replacement therapy, whether it involves hormone drug products or bio-identical hormones is referred to as HRT in most publications. Very few physicians or journalists both to make that distinction as to whether or not they are talking about hormone drug products or bio-identical hormones. Many may not even be aware of this actual distinction. The rare journalist or physician who is willing to distinguish will refer to the information regarding bio-identical hormone replacement as bHRT.
